The Bullet Bird Project
The Bullet Bird Project was conceived during the scores of shootings that occurred in 2018. My combined feelings of helplessness and hopefulness led me to conjure an other-worldly solution, one in which birds began to intervene in the problematic affairs of humans. The poem below explains how the birds became the bullet birds.
The Bullet Bird Project
As she sat on her mountaintop perch
A swollen heart she was feeling
Looking down at all the misery
From the shootings and long road to healing.
The Eagle tried not to bother herself
With the activity she saw from afar
But witnessing became unavoidable
No more could she sit as a Star.
She gathered the birds from everywhere,
And said, “I have a project for you.
Steal all those bullet shells that fire the guns
And hide them all on you.”
The birds were always seeking adventure,
Not to mention a change in look.
Swept down to the US of A as they mused
Does thievery make you a crook?
Not until the violence has ended
Will the birds be done with their search.
Then the doves released, the job complete,
The Eagle replete
On her perch.
