HELLO, I’M KATE

My mosaic-making journey began in 2015 when I spotted an introductory class among the pages of a local community college catalog. None of these creative-type classes ever held my interest for very long, but I thought I’d give this one a shot. I wasn’t expecting much; as a matter of fact, it wasn’t until the morning of the class that I realized I was supposed to bring the mosaic pieces myself. Fortunately, a very good friend handed over her family’s sea glass collection and I already had a broken mirror so I was good to go. From Day 1, learning the skill of cutting pieces and placing them in relationship to each other held my interest like, well, nothing ever had before. (See below for Project #1.) Once we had learned the basics of the craft, the teacher expected us to sketch out and execute a clear plan for our next project; but in defiance, I found it far more satisfying to have no plan and let the pieces do the talking. I have built upon this resistance ever since and continue to marvel at the magical result of the random movement of these pieces.

I hope you take joy in my mosaics as much as I love making them.
